The Nutritional Mutualisms Lab at Lingnan University is seeking a Research Assistant to contribute to a project assessing lichen biodiversity across habitats. This project involves significant fieldwork, microscopy, and DNA barcoding. More information is below. Admission for fall 2026 is closed. Prospective students interested in joining the lab in 2027 can contact Dr. Conti-Jerpe starting in August of 2026. Currently, we have funding to support student projects investigating corals and lichens, however applicants interested in any of the lab's study systems are encouraged to apply.
Prospective students can apply to the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme, which offers competitive annual stipends (~$43,000 USD) and travel allowances (~$1,800 USD). The application typically opens in early September and is due early December.
Students who do not recieve the HKPF recieve a monthly stipend (HK$18,900) and medical benefits and are required to pay annual tuition (~42K HKD). Local students can apply for a tuition waiver.
Once accepted, students are also able to apply for housing in the campus hostels (dorms), which offer extremely competitive prices (~$1000 USD per semester).
Research Assistant
About the position: 12-month position starting September 2026 with the possibility to extend for two additional years. The successful applicant will receive a competitive salary commiserate with experience, annual leave, and medical benefits.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, or related field; MPhil or MS in related field is preferred. Applicants must have previous experience conducting terrestrial fieldwork and molecular lab work (DNA extraction, PCR, etc.). Experience with lichen identification preferred.
